Respect My Region's Will Primo interviews Slushii at Bumbershoot 2017. This interview took place in Seattle, WA at Bumbershoot Music Festival. RMR Interviews Slushii At Bumbershoot 2017 RMR: What inspired you to go by the name Slushii? S: I’m really into Yugio. Its like Pokémon but nerdier. There was this one card called Slushy with the same color scheme, the pink and purple. I just really liked that color scheme, so I always kept it in the back of my head. Initially I was going to be Sushii, but it was taken! So I was like wait, there’s that card, Slushy. What if I alter it and make it my own? RMR: From Best Buy employee to worldwide known DJ, at the age of 20! How does that feel? S: It’s weird.. like literally I remember, not even a year and a half ago I was working black Friday, and almost dying. I was up all day greeting people and stuff. Now I dropped outta school & I’m here. So it’s still weird! I see all these people in the crowd and I’m like “I’m literally your age.” RMR: Did you used to go to shows? S: No actually, I was kind of a shut-in my whole life. I played video games, I was like the nerd my whole life. Now everyone is like “you’re so cool, DJ life.” I still go home and play Overwatch for eight hours a day. RMR: What is your favorite part about DJing for thousands of people / Favorite part about performing in Seattle? S: I really like controlling the playlist, like whenever I’m in a car and someone hands me the aux, “I love it!” I can just play the stuff I think is really cool. Like tonight I played Bulletproof. That’s one of the songs I really been feeling right now. I mean it’s kind of a classic now. I just been listening to it a lot so I thought it would be cool to throw the whole song in my set! So just playing whatever I want. Seattle is cool cause I feel like the crowd here is super diverse. Like there are some cities that are super bass oriented and then some are radio / pop oriented. But here I play everything and they’re just like “alright dude, I’ll take it all!” I vibe with everything. RMR: When SoundCloud deleted your DJ Swoon account, what / who convinced you to persevere? S: I was staying with a friend in Florida. I didn’t even have access to…anything. It was terminated, my computer was at home, and I only had my phone. I was like “Okay, I’m a sitting duck.” I don’t have my password and I still don’t have the password to the email they sent me, so I couldn’t even contest it. I tried emailing them, but I was hitting a brick wall. I was just like okay, well I have this other project. The Slushii project was already a thing, by that time, but it was something I was toying with. So I was like I’ll try this thing one more time and if it doesn’t work out I’ll just be a lawyer or something. So I took that chance! Take risks! RMR: What projects are you working on outside of music, if any? S: Uhm…Yes, I’m trying to write an Anime right now. Like a full length movie project. I was at the airport one day and thought “this would be really cool.” I used to be able to draw like in high school, but just kinda lost the ability. So now, I’m just writing down everything that’s going on in my head. Yea man, its been a goal of mine since the very, very beginning. So Slushii Anime in the next…within ten years!
